Abstract | Nowadays, telecom networks have been evolving from legacy time division multiplexing (TDM) deployments towards IP based next generation networks. Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GEPON) is expected to play a major role in next generation networks. GEPON is based on passive optical networks (PONs) that can meet the increasing traffic demands. GEPON has two main components that are Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Optical Network Units (ONUs). ONUs are connected to the OLT which is in turn connected to outside networks. Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) is a dynamic process that allows quick reapportion of bandwidth on the PON based on current traffic requirements. The DBA process is controlled by the OLT, which issues grants or permits that allow individual ONUs to transmit within specified time slots. This research study uses the OLT from UTStarcom available at CAT Telecom to monitor the behavior of the bandwidth usage. The OLT allows users to change the modes of DBA and other relevant DBA parameter. The experiment results compare the throughput behaviors among different DBA modes under various traffic scenarios. |
