AbstractThe oil palm is a new plant in the northeast region which has been promoted for biodiesel production. The objectives of this research are to study the socio - economic of oil palm farmers, production process and marketing as well as to analyze the return on investment of the oil palm farming in Seka District, Nong Khai Province. A 10 rais of oil palm farming is selected for the return on investment analysis because it i s widely planted. The yield in year 5 to 25 is assumed by the production from the South area for financial analysis since oil palms in this area do not yield yet. By using the discounted rate at 2.5 percent per year, the investment analysis indicates th at NPV (net present value), BCR (benefit - cost ratio) and IRR (internal rate of return) of the investment were 374,094.87 baht, 1.48 and 8.94 percent, respectively. These results indicate that oil palm farming investment was financially worthwhile. The resu lts of sensitivity analysis for risk assessment as well as cost and benefit deviation of investment showed that the investment became non - profitable, when the benefit declined by 37 percent with cost was held constant, or the cost increased by 48 percent w ith benefit was held constant. However, oil palm is a new crop that coming into this region, farmers are still lack of knowledge and market is also few, thus it needs more supporting from both public and private sector. The recommendation from this study i s that the government should support the group gathering of farmers to produce the oil for use in community including the use of waste from palm oil production. Everybody does not need to plant oil palm; rice farmers sell rice to palm farmers and buy biodi esel from the plant that palm farmers owns shares so that, farmers can make a sustainable living in the community. However, government has to support knowledge, technology and production factors.
