AbstractContract Farming has over the years been considered potential and promoted as a key tool for modern rural development. However, conventionally farmers are “small” toward enterprises with weak bargaining power and even within a contractual relationship. 122 rural farmers come from Kien Tho and Phuc Thinh communes, both are mountainous areas and belong to one of the poorest district in Viet Nam - Ngoc Lac, have been interviewed to study on their motivations and constraints in implementing the contract of growing sugarcane with Lam Son Sugarcane Joint stock Cooperation (LaSuCo), the largest sugarcane company in Viet Nam. By employing nonparametric tests for evaluation, this study indica ted that stable income is the most decisive factor in driving farmers in local area to grow contracted sugarcane, along with other significant motivations such as inputs provision, ease to adopt new practices, minimized production risk and zero monetary in vestment. Constraints or disadvantages have also been analyzed and evaluated but proved to be not significant enough in confronting farmers to grow contracted sugarcane. The derived recommendation is to establish farmers Common Interest Group instead of current mechanism to enhance contract farming’s effectiveness in rural development.
