Abstract | Thailand is recorded as theworld’s largest rice exporter, due to the continuously increase in export quantityevery year. However, regarding the higher price of rice and higher logistics costs than competitors, Thailandisstarting to beaware to the loss of international market share in rice exporting. Therefore, thisstudy wasaimed to study the farming and production characteristics of rice, specifically Thai Hom Mali Rice,as well as its supply chain which wastraced back from the three selected rice exporters whoclassified as small, medium and large size of exporters,in order to find the source of rice, in parallel with the logistics costs along the supply chains and the difference of logistics costs between three exporters. Meanwhile, the major constraints of farmers, millers and exporters werealso presented. The data werecollected from 3 rice exporters, 18 rice millers and 54 farmers spreading in 5 provinces in lower northeastern region of Thailand. The results revealedthat, thefarming performance has been changed following the introduction of machinery; however, the relationship between farmers and exporters wasnot shown. The supply chain of small exporter presented most stakeholders androutes, whilebroker played the most strengthen stakeholder, whereas, the purchasing contract was made strongly between large exporter, millers and brokers leading the greatest outcome which similar to the case of medium exporter. It wasnoticed that the risk and damage costs presentedas the highest cost in logistics’ activities, followed by transportation, inventory holding, administration and milling/processing costs, respectively. The small exporter performedto the highest of logisticscosts, while the lowest belongedto the large exporter. Each constraintactedas the linkage to the new constraints, while the most severe constraint of small, medium and large exporter was, lacking of budget issue and the uncertainty of customers’ demand, respectively. |
