Abstract | The present study was conducted in Yatsauk Township, Southern Shan State during November, 2014 to May, 2012 to analyze the existing core value chain (Chain 1: Farmer 1 – Wholesaler – Retailer – Consumer and Chain 2: Farmer 2 – Broker - Wholesaler – Retailer – Consumer). The objectives of the study are (1) to analyze value chain of mango, (2) to identify the constraints in the value chain of mango and (3) to generate recommendations to promote the value chain of mango. Three types of farmers are classified as small, medium and large according to the land holding size in order to get detail information of farmers. Qualitative method was applied by using in-depth interview to collect the primary data, while the quantitative method was used to estimate the cost and margin, and profits of actors at each level of value chain. Marketing margin analysis and SWOT analysis were used in this study. It was found that large farmers got the highest profit as they invest more inputs in production, but it not much different than the medium farmers and the small farmers’ net profit was the least. It means that the more production costs created the more profits for the famers. The overall results revealed that the percent share of marketing margin per box or 15 kilograms of mangos was highest (34.89%) for “farmer 1” who sold their fruits directly to the wholesalers, while “farmer 2” who sold through brokers got 15.63% marketing margin. Brokers’ percentage share was the second highest (21.61%), followed by the retailers (18.12%). Wholesalers got the least percent share of marketing margin among the actors (9.74%) per box, but they could sell large amount of mangos and got commission for every unit. Major constraints of farmers are poor post-harvest technology, lack of cold storage, lack of processing factories, adverse climatic conditions, unstable market price, lack of market transparency, over supply of mangos due to short harvesting season. Major constraint of brokers is the necessity of well experiences in price determination and estimation of yield. For the wholesalers, the main constraint is difficult to collecting money from the retailers. The major constraints of retailers are highly perishable fruits, many losses of mangos, the poor quality of fruits and the malpractices by the wholesalers or farmers. Therefore, in order to get the efficient value chain, cooperative marketing system should be established to reduce the number of intermediaries in value chain and accurate market information regarding price and demand should be easily accessed to all the actors along the chain. Trainings for good agriculture practices; pruning, planting, more efficient use of chemicals and fertilizer and also for postharvesting management, value adding and efficient use of losses to the mango should be provided by the government or other organizations to reduce costs and a more profitable business. Government should provide proper storage, grading and packaging facilities, subsidized efficient transportation facilities, subsidized farm mechanization and financial assistance to the farmers. |
