Abstract | Poultry industry is one of the major components of Mongolian agriculture, which is a key sector for the economic growth of the country. At present, poultry and related industries account for about 15 percent of total agricultural products in the country. Many chicken based processing industries have been established during the past two decades. There are around 50 intensive chicken farms in Ulaanbaatar. Due to the lower cholesterol content as compared to mutton and beef, chicken meat is considered healthier, and thus, its consumption and subsequent demand has gradually increased in last few years. According to the National Statistics Office, monthly egg consumption in Mongolia was 2.4 eggs per person in 2005. However, there are many problems faced in the Chicken Industry of Mongolia including standardization of processes, poor infrastructure such as the road and storage facilities, lack of modem technology and the market information, and the imported eggs from Russia. The climatic parameters also considered greatly affecting the poultry industry. Summer is most appropriate season for the poultry industry. This study was conducted in the capital city of Mongolia named Ulaanbaatar, because the most of intensive Chicken husbandry is developing in Ulaanbaatar city. There are around 50 poultry enterprises located, 28% of them are small enterprises, having breeds which ranged between 50,000 to 100,000, medium enterprises having 100,000 to 250,000 breeds, and large enterprises having above 250,000 breeds. On the other hand, intervention for poultry industries and improvement for future growth are very important in Mongolia. For example; Mongolia has to seek new opportunities for the poultry sector to improve storage facility and packaging, to improve infrastructure such as transportation facilities, and power. Moreover, the government should support training programs on technical, commercial and management aspects. |
