Abstract | The effect of two different feeding m ethods, fixed station feeding and m obile blower feeding, on growth perform ance, yield, size va riation and distribution in the pond in Nil e tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) and also water quality, plan kton and econom ic perform ance were studied on a commercial farm in Petchaburi province, central Thailand. Monosex tilapias (average initial body wei ght of 300 g) we re stocked in six 8000-11200 m 2 earthen ponds at a density of about 1 fish/ m 2 . A MN 11 commercial tilap ia pe llet f eed with 30% protein was used for the experim ent. There were no significant differences (P> 0.05) in survival, yield, body com positio n and feed utilization between fixed station feedi ng m ethod and mobile blower feeding m ethod. Results showed that fish were fed by using mobile blower feeder had individual m ean weight of 969 ± 16 g, daily weight gain of 5.6 ± 0.1 g/fish/day and specific growth rate of 0.98 ± 0.01 %/day which significantly higher than fish were fed by using fixed station feeder (903 ± 25 g, 5.0 ± 0.2 g/fish/day and 0.92 ± 0.02 %/day, respectively). The siz e va riation of in itia l fish and final f ish was sim ilar. The fr equency of weight and length classes in treatment 2 (Mobile blower fe eding) show s a shif t to the r ight bu t this shif t was not suf ficient to have signif icantly dif ferent with trea tm ent 1 (Fixed station feeding). Fish distribution during f eeding tim e in pond fed by fixed station and mobile blower feeding was different. Most fish in pond fed by fixed st ation feeding method gathered at the outlet (feeding area), wh ile the homogenous distribution was found in pond fed by m obile blower feeding m ethod. There were no significant differe nce s in alm ost a ll wate r quality pa ram eters. However , DO concentration in the afternoon at outlet area (fixed feeding area) in fi xed station feeding pond (6.16 mg/L) was lower than mobile bl ower feeding pond (7.36 m g/L). Plankton genus and density was sim ilar between the two trea tm ents. Never theless, the d ensity of Scenedesmu s spp. in fixed station feeding pond was hi gher than dispersion feeding pond. In add ition, there was n o sign ificant dif ference in the econom ic perfor mance between the two feeding m ethods. |
