AbstractThree polymorphic microsatellites were developed and used to study the genetic diversity and population structure of C. alburnus in four lakes in the Yangtze River in China. The gene diversity was high (77%) among populations. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 4 to 10 with 7.3 mean alleles among four populations. The mean heterozygosity ranged from 0.49 ± 0.26 to 0.802 ± 0.053. Significant deviations from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium were found at the loci and in all four populations in which heterozygote deficits were apparent. Moreover, the inbreeding coefficient (FIS) was 0.14-0.29 in these populations, except for Tangxun population (-0.063). The FST values between populations indicated that there were significant genetic differentiations for the topmouth culter populations from freshwater lakes (0.106). Tangxun and Chao populations were the closest based on genetic identity (85%) with lowest genetic distance (17.2%). This study indicates that the genetic diversity of the wild population is higher compared to previous studies. The information would be useful to future breeding programs and conservation measures for the different populations of topmouth culter.
