AbstractSeveral crabs banks have been established in Thailand with the goal of sustaining blue swimming crab resources, but many of these crab banks have failed probably due to lack of participation of fishers. This study was conducted to determine the level of participation of fishers in crab banks and the factors they consider in participating or not participating in crab banks. Data were collected th rough questionnaire surveys of 153 crab fishers in 5 crab bank villages in 3 provinces in the Gulf of Thailand. The study was based on the hypothesis that participation level is correlated with fishery information access, knowledge of crab resources and membership in other community groups. The survey showed that 91% of fishers have medium level of fishery information access, 78% have high level of knowledge on blue swimming crab resources, and 33% are members in 2 community groups Regarding participation level, 51% of the fishers are in the medium level, 35% in the low level, and 14% in the high level. Most of them had low participation level in decision making, implementation and evaluation but have high level in sharing the benefit. Spearman's rank correlation coefficient showed tha t the level of fishery information access, knowledge on blue swimming crab resources and membership in other community group have moderately positive correlation with the participation level in crab banks at 0.01 level of significance. Based on the respondents’ opinion, the need for conservation of blue swimming crab resources and the crab bank leader’s integrity and management style were the most important participation and non-participation factors, respectively. These findings would be useful to improve the participation level in other crab banks.
