Abstract | This research evaluated the current status and conversion patterns ofabandoned shrimp pond which was conducted intwo zones of Suratthani province, Thailand based on the different environmental parametersof the area. The aimsof this study are to evaluate the causes of shrimp pond abandonment and determine thealternative strategiesto renovate abandoned shrimp pond. Moreover, the local resources availability in thestudy area and market accessfor each strategy had been evaluated. In addition, this study evaluated the socio-economic condition of those farmers. This study also determined the suitability of environmental parametersand cost-benefits of each strategy. The research had been done through the households’ survey by using questionnaires during August to September 2011. There were 124 respondents who had been interviewed. This study showed that the diseases outbreak and failure ofeconomy of the farmerswere the main causes of shrimp pond abandonment in bothzones. The respondents decided to renovatethe shrimp pond abandonment by using the aquaculture sector. In zone I, most of the respondents (70.97%) continually practiced the aquaculturewhile 93.55 % of respondents inzone II converted the landto the agriculture sector. Most of the respondents agreed that the resources availability in the area wasone of the factors for selectionthe strategies. Water, feed and seed resources had been mentioned by the respondents who practiced aquaculture sector while pond sediment was an availability resourcefor palm oil plantation in both zones. The systemof market access was different foreach strategy. However, all of farmerssold their production in the local area. Considering the socio-economic condition, it is showed that the strategies except extensive culture andrent strategy could be improved the household fromnatural to high level. Based on all of economic calculation, the result showed that all of strategies were profitable. Tilapia culture strategy shows the highest value of Net Present Value. In case of Benefit Cost Ratio, the agricultural sector was higher than aquaculture sector. In term of aquaculture, the highest BCR value (except the extensive culture) was seabass culture. Considering the payback period, time period for recovering cost investment was different. Palm oil plantation takes the longest time period for recovering cost investment. In term of aquaculture, shrimp culture was the longest time for recovering the cost investment. Environmental condition, the environmental parameters were suitable for aquaculture. In contrast, there were someparameters such as annual rainfall and soil characteristic that were not suitable for palm oil plantation. However, there was adaptation alternative for avoidingthe poor drainageproblem by digging the drainage or canals. |
