Abstract | The challenges of improving biodiversity conservation and socio - economic conditions of poor communities living in remote areas are complex and often require multiple types of interventions. With the increase in tourism demand, community based ecotourism is being considered as a potential tool for addressing these issues. Community based ecotourism programs in many cases still have many shortfalls as the aims they set out to achieve are limited in number of participants who actually benefit and the improvement in the environment and biodiversity is usually insignificant. For community based ecotourism to provide significant conservation and livelihood impacts, local communities need to be empowered to pursue their own development agenda. This research used participatory based approaches to develop a framework for improving community based ecotourism on Koh Rong nieu, Kratie, Cambodia to enhance human well - being, tourist experience, and strengthen biodiversity conservation. It facilitated development of a community vision and assessment of community needs for appropriately designed products. Participatory tools play a crucial role in community based ecotourism development. The methodology proposed was useful to identify capacity building needs of stakeholders, propose new and improved products, information transfer, and short and long term strategic action plans by using an integrated stakeholder approach. This study provides a valuable tool for sustainable community based ecotourism development that meets the local needs and visions of the communities and tourists. |
