AbstractA study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of dietary administration of herbal extract for the hematology, immune response and disease resistance of the Nile tilapia against Streptococcus agalactiae Biotype 2 . Six herbs were screened for antibacteri al activity against the bacterium. Among all the tested herbs, Moringa leaves extract displayed the highest antibacterial activity against S. agalactiae Biotype 2. Nile tilapia was fed diet incorporated Moringa leaves extract for period of 32 days. Length & weight samplings were conducted on 0, 16 th and 32 nd day. Fishes were challenged with 0.1 ml suspension of S. agalactiae Biotype 2 and mortalities were monitored for 14 days. Blood were collected on 0, 16 th , 32 nd , and 48 th day for analysis of hematologica l, specific and non specific parameters. The results showed that the fish fed with low level(1.5%) of Moringa leaves extract incorporated in diet significantly enhanced red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum bactericidal activity , serum lysozyme activity. Survival of fish fed diet incorporated with Moringa extract at 1.5% was 100% after injecting with diluted suspension of Streptococcus agalactiae ( Biotype 2) whereas survival of fish given feed without herbal extract was significantly lower (53.67%), indicating that Moringa extract can develop immunity and resistance of tilapia against S. agalactiae Biotype 2 and therefore an alternative to chemicall y synthesized antibiotics.
