AbstractThe study was conducted to evaluate the optimal concentration of marigold flower as a natural source of xanthophyll in dietary supplements, and its influence on flesh colo r of hybrid catfish, Clarias macrocephalus x Clarias gariepinus . The fish were fed w ith control diet (without marigold petals) and test diet containing xanthophyll concentrations of 11, 20, 30 and 40 mg/kg obtained from marigold flower (MF) for the period of 8 weeks. Based on the findings, the feeding utilization and growth rate were not changed with dietary treatments in a significant way, except ratio of protein efficiency, survival rate and also average weight. Increasing in xantho phyll levels in diets resulted in overall declined trend in the lightness (L*) in th e flesh . Red (a*) and yellow (b*) color in the flesh have increase d (p<0.05) by treatmen t with xanthophyll diet. Treatment with diet containing 40 mg/kg xanthophyll provided the highest xanthophyll accumulation in skin and flesh. In addition, the colo r parameter (b*) also had the relationship with flesh xant hophyll concentrations, it showed that xanthophyll in hybrid catfish were of yellow colo r . The linear regression analysis from the correlation between yellowness in flesh and flesh concentration of the xanthophyll pigment in hybrid catfish could be used to estimate the xanthophyll levels in hybrid catfish flesh based on t he yellowness values (b*). The results of currently investigated study suggested that, 40 mg/kg (25.06 g MF/kg in diet) was the optima l amount of marigold flower, rich in xanthophyll pigment to enhance the color of hybrid catfish, Clarias macrocephalus x Clarias gariepinus.
