Abstract | The current study was conducted in six sub - districts of the Muang district of Samut S akhon province, Thailand between August and September 2015 using a questionnaire survey. Ninety - one fishers were interviewed during the survey to evaluate the state of knowledge and attitudes on the fisheries regulation for Seasonal Closed A rea (SCA) in t he Inner Gulf of Thailand (IGOT) . The results of the study show ed that there were no difference s between the fishers participate in commercial fisheries (CCF) and s mall - scale fisheries (SSF) in respect to their gender, age, education level, fishing experience , and income. Most fishers of the CCF had a good knowledge and understanding of the SCA. Both fishers of the CCF and SSF had more participation in the meetings for SCA establishment. Most of them had a relatively low participation during the process of defining the closed area, time and duration of fishing restriction s , explanation s on the status of fisheries in the IGOT, and the promulgation of the SCA. Factors affected the attitudes of the fishers towards the SCA were e ducation level, age, and group of fisheries that they belong to i.e. either CCF or SSF . Fishers with a good knowledge on the SCA had a relatively higher agreement regarding the area and boundary of the SCA. Moreover, the two fisheries groups ( CCF and SSF ) had different attitudes on the SCA. Most of the CCF agreed that SCA had positive impact on the amount of catch, while SSF was neutral . The fishers raised their concerns about SCA and suggested to re - evaluat e the ban on push net , determin e its im pact s on fishers , find remedial measures for fishers affected by the ban on push nets , improv e the capacity and performance of patrol to enforcement of the SCA , and cancel the Seasonal Closed Area for the further consideration by the D epartment of Fisheries (D OF ) . It was found that fishers’ attitudes were influenced by socio - economic profile, and level s of knowledge and participation in SCA . It is expected that t hese findings would be useful in improving fisheries management in the IGOT. |
