Abstract | Effects of high temperature occurring at the panicle initiation and flowering stages on growth development and yield of local rice varieties were studied under controlled environment conditions c ompared with normal conditions. The results showed that high temperature treatments (35 ̊C and 40 ̊C) at both growth stages changed the growing patterns of plant height, number of days to flowering and to maturity, number of tiller s and panicle s per plant and leaf area relative to control treatments (normal conditions). Biomass and grain production were also restrained. All varieties (KDML105, NR and SMJ) performed with different sensitivities and responses to temperature and decr eased of yield and productivity. Compared with the control treatment of each variety , the KDML105 was equally sensitive to high temperatures wit h its percentage of empty grain reaching a peak of 90.6 % , whereas SMJ and NR were more stab le in yield , but with slight reduction empty grains when exposed to high temperatures during flowering. It was found that both SMJ and NR not only produced higher p ercentage of filled grains but also had a lower percentage of empty grains, especially at flowering which is the most sensitive stage to high temperatures. The result show that high temperature during panicle initiation can have an effect on p roductivity s uch as number of tiller s and panicle s per plant, while during flowering can have a serious effect on grain yield of rice mainly affecting seed setting rate , which is the component most sensitive to high temperature. In this study, it is clear that varieti es, growth stages and temperatures considerably influence d most of the growth parameters and especially yield , and showed that high temperature at flowering tim e as one of the main causes of rice yield reduction. |
