AbstractFoot - and - Mouth disease (FMD) and Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) are a highly contagious to cloven - hoofed animals. FMD and PRRS outbreaks have alarmed in almost all developed countries and economic impact have significantly increased in the concern ed of governments worldwide. The FMD and PRRS are also serious problems of swin e industry in Thanhhoa province, Vietnam. This study was an impact assessment of PRRS and FMD disease s on the pig production sector in five districts in Thanhhoa province during 2007 – 2010. In addition, many new policies have boosted the pig sector development. A combination of formal and informal methodologies such as include inf ormant interviews, householder interviews, field observations, participatory observations of tra ining courses, analysis reports, etc were used for the study. The epidemic and spread of FMD and PRRS in Thanhoa province has occurred over decades. It has affected the pig production in Thanhhoa province and Vietnam on many different aspects : 43% of the pig populations dropped and 6 .9 % yield of the pig production declined . Disease also was impacted on the environment, society, and abandoning of the pig indus try by 30% of the pig holders. Under the support of government the swine industry of Vietnam and Thanhhoa province has shown positive changes . The rate of exotic blood has is improved in pig from 30 to 75 % and pig population from 335.7 thousands in 198 0 to 1,250 thousands in 2005 . This is connected with increasing vaccination programs. Although the government has issued many policies to prevent the spread of disease s which still remain as a main problem to the development of the pig sector.
