AbstractIn developing countries like India , oil and gas construction EPC projects are highly exposed to various risks. Managing risks in construction projects has been recognised as a very important management process in order to achieve the project objectives in terms of time, cost, quality, safety and environmental sustainabi lity. This research focuses on the identification of the major risks in the oil and gas EPC projects. Questionnaire surveys were used to collect data. Based on a comprehensive assessment of the likelihood of occurrence and their impacts on th e project obje ctives, this research identifies 15 critical risk factors. This research found that these risks are mainly related to con tractors, clients and designers, with few related to government bodie s, subcontractors/suppliers The Top 5 critical risk factors ident ified in the Engineering phase are 1) Scope uncertainty, 2) Ineffective planning and management, 3) Design changes and errors, 4) Inadequate project organization structure, 5) Unclear quality requirements. Top 5 critical risk factors identified in the Proc urement phase are 1) Insufficient resources, equipment and material, 2) Supplier availability, 3) Unfamiliarity with design, codes, standards and requirements, 4) Defective materials and 5) Price fluctuations. Top 5 critical risk factors identified in the Construction phase are 1) Incompetence of project team, 2) Construction cost overrun, 3) Construction time delay, 4) Tight project schedule and 5) Poor safety management. . This was followed by correlation analysis which illustrated the relationship betwee n the risk factors and impact on cost, schedule and quality and the risks which effects cost, schedule and quality were identified.
