AbstractE-books have become an important player in the industry and, with continuous entrants of e-readers and tablets, have become more popular than ever. There are various e-book formats including the EPUB format which has been accepted as a standard. However, e-books do not have a well-defined model. Also, e-books today fail to capture important piece of information that could be useful and make available valuable services to authors and readers. This thesis proposes a data model for e-books using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) which is graph-based in nature. The proposed model allows for storing e-book content in a hierarchical structure along with metadata for each content chunk which is called content node. The concept of content node is powerful because it allows e-book authors to specify information related to a particular node which will enable readers to be able to search for additional information for each node easily. Moreover, because RDF is the technology used for linking resources in the Linked Open Data cloud, the created e-books could be linked with other RDF resources in the cloud and this will create a vast pool of information and knowledge. A prototype e-book authoring tool has been developed and used for indirect evaluation on the proposed data model. The results indicated that the proposed e-book data model is flexible enough and satisfies all requirements for e-books.
