Abstract | Flash flood and landslides have become frequent events in Thailand and cause damage to life and property. Heavy rain in mountainous areas is dangerous because it causes flash floods and landslides. There are 2,371 villages located in this hazard zone as reported by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). In the last decade, the data shows that number of landslide events seem to be increasing. This might be attributed to many factors of changing environment and settlement pattern. The study made an attempt to analyze the vulnerability of the people, who have experienced the flashflood and landsl ides in Therd Thai sub-district and Mae Salong Nai sub-district, Mae Fah Luang district, Chiang Rai Province of Thailand for the last decade. The demographic profile of the respondents and socio-economic issues are analyzed. This study also identifies vulnerability of housing and infrastructure, the capacity of community to cope with future disaster and psycho-social and cultural attributes ofthe people living in flood prone area. The outcome of this study identifies the vulnerability situation that exists in the area and need to be addressed by the local people and the service providers. The results found that people are still vulnerable to flash flood and landslides due to geographical location. The preparedness of the community has remarkably increased to respond the future disaster. Early warning system is playing the vital role in the process of disaster risk reduction (DRR). However, the early warning system at the local level needs to be improved through an integrated and collaborative approach of the agencies involved at the national, . provincial, district and sub-district (tambon) levels |
