AbstractThe main focus of this study is to understand the disaster education among the secondary school children in Chiang Mai province. Assessing the disaster education in school, the study has investigated the in - classroom curricular and learner development acti vities as well as existing practices and felt needs at individual and school level. Attending the objectives, this study is designed by some core section s . First section focused on disaster vulnerability and impact on children and conceptual understanding of disaster education based on the existing literature. The second section described the methods, a descriptive survey method was used as the study methods and the questionnaire was developed and used as the key instrument with the in - depth interview and f ocus group interview. Descriptive statistics was used to in addressing the general characteristics of the sample and analytical statistic – WAI was used in comparing the students’ level of knowledge and awareness on disaster education in school. The popula tion of the study was the secondary school children in Chiang Mai province and the sample size were 334 students in public and private secondary schools in the district and 20 key informants from disaster education related agencies in Chiang Mai. For the third part of this study , the section fo cused on the major finding where two analytical attributes of this study such as in - classroom curricular and learner development activity provided by the disaster education guideline from OBEC which based on basic co re curriculum 2008 . The result of this study found that local schools provided disaster education by themselves followed by the guideline from OBCC in the way to ensure the delivery and quality of disaster education and to support the policy, but still yet implemented in everywhere. To summarize on students’ knowledge in disaster education based on the indicator provided in OBEC’s guideline, private school secondary school children gained moderate knowledge in all three subjects: social studies, science, an d health education, while public school students have got low knowledge level in all subjects. Neither drills on any kind of disaster nor evacuation were not provided in every school year which is not followed by the mandate of both schools; hence students would not be able to display any behavioral changes which can minimize the chances of them being injured or dying when a disaster occurs. The attitude of the students towards disaster management education shows that not much is being done within schools b ecause the students were advocating for more from other sources such as television and newspaper. Therefore, teacher teaching disaster education and disaster management at schools should be integrated to provide theoretical as well as practical learning to secondary school children. Finally, the study has recommended some strategies and practice in national level, provincial level, and school and community level by which disaster education may be built. As disas ter can be taught in various kind of the subjects, with all the disaster management principles and practices incorporated into the subject, and if taught by well - equipped teachers, all the students would be well prepared in terms of knowledge and skills. H ence, they could be able to pass on the knowledge and skills to their families and the communities where they live. This study has also emphasized on proper implementation of existing disaster education policy and guideline through participatory decision m aking, multi - agency and multi - level coordination.
