AbstractThe aim of this study is to understand and assess the present coping and preparedness initiatives of fishing community in Maheskhali Island Bangladesh. The focus of this study is to assess the present coping, responseand preparedness of fishing community in Maheskhali Island, a multi hazard prone coastal area of Bangladesh. In order to achieve the overall objectivesof the study, it hasbeen designed intothreemajor chapters based on objectives. First objective is to study the vulnerability of the island, in terms of doing a risk assessment. Information has been collected from various literatures, and analytical toolshas been used. The second objective is to focus on thecoping aspect of the fishing community, looking at how short term coping had been conducted in the study area and what are the response initiatives at community level. The third objective of the thesis is to highlight the preparedness of the fishing community,both from local and community perspective. Major highlightsare housing condition, availability of water, sanitation, awareness program, early warning tools and mechanism, evacuation plan etc. the preparedness had been overlooked both from community perspective and also from institutional perspective. Risk analysis shows that the preparedness level varies among community to community, and there are gaps in addressing the early warning dissemination and evacuation arrangements for the community. Finally the study concluded with summary of all chapters’ conclusion and recommendations. Engaging community how development can be done on the area, focusing in line of disaster preparedness. Recommendation are focused particularly on improvements of the current condition of cyclone shelters, facilities, awareness program, training and disaster drill, alternative livelihood approach etc. Also recommendedforinvolvingcommunity in community based disaster risk reduction activities. Furthermore, emphasized on proper implementation of current Cyclone preparedness policies and plans and programs through participatory approach, through coordination of multi stakeholders.
