Abstract | Climate change impact on the occurrence and severity of thunderstorm in Thailand has been lacked in the present day. This study investigates the impact of climate change in the occurrence (frequency) and severity (magnitude) of thunderstorm in the near future (2025 - 2035) using Galves and Davison Index (GDI) in the Bangkok area. The map for the future scenario of thunderstorm are provided in the purpose of air operation of Royal Thai Air Force. MRI-AGCM3.2s and MIROC4h, which are used in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) based on Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios were used for the future projection of temperature and specific humidity. The projection of temperature and specific humidity are varying in each pressure level but mostly in the upper air more than 700 hPa, the change is significant. The calculation of GDI shows significant increasing in the rainy season and decreasing in the winter which the upper part of Bangkok will experience more severe and less frequent thunderstorm whereas the central and lower part of Bangkok will have less severe but more frequent thunderstorm in the near future. |
