AbstractThe main objective of this study was to investigate the performance of the gasifier-engine system, namely, gasifier efficiency, generator-engine efficiency and overall efficiency of the system. A two-stage downdraft gasifier, piping system and generator-engine set were designed, fabricated and tested. Two experimental studies were conducted to produce producer gas for fuelling the engine. One was air gasification and the other was air-steam gasification. For the studies, charcoal was used as feedstock. The experiment was conducted by supplying air and steam (in case of air-steam gasification) to gasifier at various conditions of air flow rate. Variation of air supply rate to gasifier and addition of steam to gasifier influenced the producer gas composition and subsequently, the net heating value. The air supply rate to gasifier was varied in the range of 120-160 l/min and steam was supplied at 1 kg/hr (for air-steam gasification). These also resulted in the engine performance. In case of air gasification, the maximum efficiency of gasifier achieved was 57.67 % at total air flow rate of 120 l/min. The maximum efficiency of the generator-engine unit achieved was 10.30% for an electrical load of 800 Wand at total air flow rate of 150 l/min. The maximum overall efficiency of gasifier-engine system achieved was 5.69% for an electrical load of 800 Wand at total air flow rate of120 l/min. In case of air-steam gasification, the maximum efficiency of the gasifier achieved was 34.82 % at total air flow rate of 120 l/min. The maximum efficiency of generator-engine unit achieved was 10.67% for an electrical load of 800 Wand at total air flow rate of 160 1/min. The maximum overall efficiency of gasifier-engine system achieved was 3.51 % for electrical load of 800 Wand at total air flow rate of 120 l/min.
