AbstractStatic Security Assessment of Power System is must to improve power system security. Thermal limit violation of the line and system bus voltage violation are two important studies which gives the status of power system security. The main objective of power system security assessment is to have prior knowledge of the impending contingencies which will help system operator to take preventive measures to reduce the risk. A contingency analysis has been and is still widely applied technique for static power system security assessment. In this study, to rank contingency effectively, initial contingency screening is carried out using DC load flow and sensitivity analysis. After filtering contingencies that are secured, remaining contingencies are further subjected to AC load flow and voltage stability analysis. With no or limited reserve margin and less redundancy, analysis shows that Bhutan power system is very much vulnerable to contingencies like line outage and generator outage. Most of the contingencies if occurred lead to weak system voltage. Expansion of existing transmission line and transformer to higher level is felt essential. This thesis entitled, “Static Security Assessment of Power System: A Case Study of Bhutan Power System” is expected to help power system operator to prevent cascading outages that would lead to system black out.
