AbstractThis paper analyzes the CO2 reduction effects of hydropower development in Myanmar and its power trade with Thailand. These two countries are closed neighbours but in terms of energy profiles, these vary particularly in its energy sources and requirements. The Myanmar Government enhanced its energy policy to fully exploit enormous hydropower potentials and by exporting it to Thailand, it is expected to increase its foreign earnings that will finance its national policy while helping Thailand with its power requirements that currently is becoming an important issue. To determine the optimal mix of generation planning that meets anticipated electricity demand while fulfilling specified constraints for Thailand, the Wien Automatic System Planning version IV (WASP-IV) was used. Results of this study show how joint resource development is beneficial for both Myanmar and Thailand in financial point of view and environmental point of view. Further, this study recommends solutions for the attainment of energy security in Thailand, least cost generation expansion planning and in improving the fruitful outcomes of hydropower trading between Myanmar and Thailand - seen as a win-win solution for both countries.
