AbstractMicrogrid system which combines distributed generators and loads as an independent entity in distribution system, and controls them locally is a means to enhance better power quality and reliability of the distribution system. In this thesis, the microgrid is applied to Mae Hong Son distribution system which is the highest outage province of Thailand so as to improve its reliability. In order to enable Mae Hon Son system to operate as a microgrid in islanding mode, particle swarm optimization (PSO) with optimal power flow (OPF) combined with PEA's GIS data of Mae Hong Son distribution system is used to find the optimal size and location of new distributed generators for increasing total generating capability of the system with existing distributed generators to support operation in islanding mode during 2010-2015. Two cases are proposed including Case I adding one PV power plant and Case II adding two PV power plants. Main components of each PV power plant consisting of PV array, inverter and battery storage system are simply designed using manufacturing data. Economic and financial analysis are used to evaluate a better option from utility and investor point of views. Economic and financial analysis indicate that Case II is the most effective option for both utility and investor. Power flow analysis using PSS/ADEPT is used to evaluate the performance of the system.
