Abstract | Nowadays, Lao PDR faces major challenges in achieving its goal of increasing the access of electricity and utilizing this powerful energy in poverty reduction. There are many numerous activities such as improvement of the billing system, upgrading MV and LV distribution conductors, calibrating and replacing inaccurate meters, and installing new capacitors. As a result, total system loss have been reduced somewhat to a level of about 10.78 % at the end of 2010. Study about the methods to improve voltage profile and reduce power loss has also been carried out for many years. In this thesis, optimal placement of the capacitor has been suggested to improve the voltage profile and reduce the total system loss. The placement of capacitor in power distribution networks in Lao PDR has been determined by using the sensitivity - based method with the PSS/ADEPT software to find the optimal capacitor banks placement. The optimal size of capacitor placement is determined by the repetitive load flow to achieve the total minimum system loss. The simulation results recommend the location and size of the optimal capacitor could be installed at the 115/22 kV Thangone Distribution Substation in order to reduce the total loss significantly and improve the voltage profile of the system well within acceptable limits. |
