AbstractThe aim of this study was to present an effective method for planning of feeder automation (FA) for Hanoi power distribution system to improve its reliability. In which number and locations of automated switches in feeders were optimized. Another purpose was to evaluate the economics of feeder automation in Hanoi power distribution system through the planning for feeders of a typical substation. Finally effect of feeder automation on reliability of Hanoi power distribution system was examined in the study. The planning is based on the value of reduction of outage cost to the consumer in each feeder. In which the optimal feeder switches placement problem is formulated based on minimum outage cost of feeder and solved by genetic algorithm with MATLAB. Optimal number of automated switches is selected based on NPV of each case with different number of switches in a feeder. The result of the study was an optimal solution of FA for feeders of a typical substation in Hanoi power distribution system including optimal number of automated switches and their optimal locations in each feeder. The study showed that the method applied was an effective planning method for feeder automation which applicable for any power distribution network, ranging from a few feeders to a large scale system. The result revealed that an AF project is economically attractive for Hanoi power distribution system.
