AbstractSmart distribution network is a modern concept which refers to the conversion of the mainstream or typical electricity distribution network to a modern network. This new conversion is a foreseeable solution to the power system problems of the modern century. Upgradation of the current electric power distribution system is an important step to implement the smart grid technology Renewable energy sources as distributed generation (DG) source, one of the major components of smart distribution system is a very widespread topic today for power generation. Bangladesh has a good potential for electricity generation from the renewable energy sources such as, solar photovoltaic(PV). Awareness for generating power from solar PV has been observed. In the rural areas there are thousands of stand alone solar home systems already existing. But unfortunately, there has been no much progress on the evaluation of solar PV potential for electricity generation in the urban areas. With a compact infrastructural design in the urban areas, rooftop solar PV is a very promising source of electricity. The grid tied rooftop solar PV systems ensure lots of benefits to the society. The main aims of this thesis are to model a distribution system with distributed generation facility by carrying out a load flow analysis on the existing distribution network of a specific area of Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh and find out the potential capacity of the rooftop solar PV for urban electrification and lastly with the help of geographic information systems (GIS) platform to map the areas with rooftop solar PV and create a GIS database comprising the customer information and electric network diagram. Compared with the previous works done by different researchers, the methodology that has been followed in this thesis ensures the maximum accuracy limit which needs practical experience and observation of the research location. Implementation of GIS in Dhaka city power distribution network will ensure the benefits of improved management system of the utilities and its resources. The way this system helps to link all the data sets and share the database, it eases the control and operation of many difficult and time consuming works. The proposed system model has been simulated and found to be a technically feasible step that can be implemented in Dhaka. The research findings indicate that rooftop solar PV system for electricity generation has a very promising potential as it will diminish the recent power crisis and forced load shedding occurances in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
