Abstract | CFB boiler is a type of boiler with high combustion efficiency. Moreover, CFB boiler has fuel flexibility so that it can use different types of fuel. On the other hand, coal is one of favorite fuels used in boiler due to its high heating value. In addition, coal in the world is still abundant. However, the use of high coal as fuel can increase amount of CO2 in the environment. This does not support the mission of saving the environment that has been initiated by several countries in the world. The combustion of coal with biomass or known as co-firing can be one of the solutions to reduce emissions of harmful gases such as CO2 and SO2 into the environment. On the other hand, co-firing coal with biomass causes higher risk of ash deposition which are slagging and fouling. Bark and coal are the most common fuels used in the CFB boiler used for this research. In case of co-firing coal with bark in the CFB boiler, this research found that the combustion efficiency decreased when burning more bark. On the other hand, slagging and fouling due to coal combustion in furnace is lower than combustion of bark, palm shell or pulp and paper mill sludge. In co-firing coal with bark, bark should be lower than 20% of total fuel weight or coal should be more than 80% of total fuel weight to avoid high risk of fouling occurred. Moreover, bark should be used lower than 18% of weight fuel or coal is 82% of weight fuel to avoid high risk of slagging occurred. On the other hand, high risk for agglomeration starts when 90% of the total fuel in bark. |
