AbstractNowadays, natural disasters, system failures, human errors, etc. may cause large failures, and also have many severe impacts on country’s economy and development like other natural disaster. Gap in generation and demand, heavily loaded condition of network, lack of sufficient transmission infrastructures and different types of energy trading mechanism led to operate the power system nearly close to its stability and security limits. Therefore, island optimization is very significant for separating whole grid to avoid wide area blackout and minimize losses, defensive islanding, i.e., intentionally splits power systems into islands to block faults from spreading to whole system is become a good alternative now The purpose of this thesis is to minimize load curtailment considering the voltage stability individually by using modified CRIW-PSO in a steady state distributed power system, and to analyze the voltage stability in islanded grid. A modified Kumamoto system and a modified IEEE 14 bus system are used for base case of study. Moreover, this thesis is also to study the load restoration after islanding for operation and planning a power system. Voltage stability and its indices will be analyzed by using Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT), and additional Matlab scripts.
