Abstract | Most of the population in need of housing fall into the lower income group which places emphasis on affordable or cost-effective housing. The threats of climate change and diminishing resources have placed a greater challenge for the housing industry to construct low energy houses. Focus on providing cost-effective low energy housing should be on the Tropics due to two important facts: (1) the characteristic hot and humid climate poses a challenge for designing thermally comfortable houses that uses less energy and (2) a high concentration of developing countries in this region with a projected increase in CO2 emissions. This report aims to provide an insight into the different aspects of cost-effective low energy housing in the Tropics through a critical literature review. Sustainable growth of tropical countries is feasible through climate sensitive design, which adopts the right building science to suit the local design and construction practices. However, there is a lack of proper institutional frameworks which hinders the mass implementation of cost-effective low energy housing. Based on the findings of the review, the author has taken Sri Lanka as a case study and proposed a framework for implementing the same. |
