Abstract | Urban areas in developing countries are confronted by severe solid waste issues mostly caused by the rapid economic development, centralization and inadequate urban management. In developing countries like Mongolia, sustainable solid waste management is left out, in dilemma of economic growth and environmental protection. Therefore, the research aimed to develop an integrated and sustainable solid waste management (ISSWM) action plan for the capital city Ulaanbaatar. The objectives of the research were developing sustainability indicators according to the feasibility of implementing solid waste management options and unique solid waste characteristics which differ along with the seasonally changing lifestyles; evaluating the sustainability performance of current and projected SWM through the indicators. The developing as well as the evaluation of indicators was based on primary and secondary data analysis. Because of 54-56% of recyclables, 3Rs was considered as a best option for both winter and summer seasons. The RDF produced from winter solid waste which has more calorific value and generates less air pollution than coal and RDF from summer solid waste was chosen as an alternative option in colder seasons. The current final disposal method open dumping is planned to be converted into a sanitary landfill by the end of 2008. |
