AbstractThe treatability of surimi processing wastewater in bench-scale continuously feed upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was investigated in order to determine the changes in the characteristic of the wastewater during operation. The reactor size was 22 L and operated under ambient temperature. The reactor was seeded with sludge obtained from anaerobic filter (AF) treating surimi wastewater. In this case divided into 2 phases, phase I involved the startup period feeding surimi processing wastewater with dilution and without dilution in phase II. Performance of the UASB reactor with influent soluble COD concentrations up to 2,600 mg/L was assessed. Over 80% of COD was effectively and biogas produced 50-80 L/d in UASB reactor at 6-8 hr of hydraulic retention time (HRT), corresponding to organic loading rate (OLR) of 6-11 kg-COD/m³.d and upflow velocity 0.25 - 0.35 m/hr. In addition, over 70% of COD was removed at OLR 14 kg COD/m³.d, HRT 4 hr and upflow velocity 0.45 m/hr. However, the maximum biogas production per day was around 90 L/d at 11-14 kg COD/m³.d of OLR and 4-6 hr of HRT. The average biogas yield through the experiment was 0.32 m³-CH₄/kg of COD removed and net energy gain was 41.33 kW.h.
