AbstractThe bioremediation of endosulfan was studied by using cycling anaerobic and aerobic soil column bioreactor with the initial concentration of 500 mg/kg soil. Mixed culture of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Pseudomonas Putida were enriched from the contaminated site in Amphoe Samchuk and Nhong Ya Sai, Supanburi Province, Thailand. Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Pseudomonas Putida are classified as gram-negative, facultative anaerobic bacteria. The maximum degradation of 86.70% was observed in Incubated-bioreactor 2(5-days anaerobic and 2-days aerobic/cycle) compared with 84.64 and 86.00% in bioreactors 1(7days anaerobic and 7-days aerobic/cycle), and 3(anaerobic only), respectively. The maximum total endosulfan degradation constant (k) of 0.0641 d⁻¹ was observed in bioreactor 2 compared to 0.0600 and 0.0597 d⁻¹ for bioreactor 1, and 3, respectively. The degradation of beta isomer was faster than alpha isomers in all experiments. The reaction product of endosulfan which includes endosulfan sulfate, endosulfan ether, and endosulfan lactone were observed in all bioreactors. The pH of soil in the incubated reactors significantly increased from 7.50±0.01 to 7.97±0.01, 7.96±0.01, and 7.95±0.01, in bioreactors 1, 2 and 3, respectively. On the other hand, pH in the controlled reactors significantly decreased. Intermediate metabolites of endosulfan including endosulfan sulfate and endosulfan diol were not detected in this study.
