AbstractBackground information about farmer perception and applying pesticide from interview 50 household shows the high and incorrect use of pesticide in the rice field in the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam. To date, little consideration has been given to the negative impacts of this agricultural activity on the aquatic resources of the region. The toxicity effects on brain cholinesterase (ChE) of one of the most commonly used insecticides, diazinon, on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) was evaluated in a static, nonrenewable system, the environmental parameters of which, such as dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and pH, fluctuated in field conditions. Three levels of insecticides, no applying, guideline and farmer rate (field 0, field 1 and field 2) were tested to assess the effects on the brain ChE activity of the common carp. Diazinon was highly toxic to this fish species, with no applying pesticide, ChE is still inhibited 11.87%, guideline dose, ChE is inhibited 59.86% and 73.34% is % inhibited activity with farmer dose. After 9 days, in control field, ChE restored almost 100%, 71.26% in field 1 and 45.18% in field 2. Diazinon is not persistent in the environment. After 3 days, no more detect diazinon concentration in water. ChE activity can be use as biomarker for predict agrochemical pollution by diazinon pesticide. The results of the present study indicate an urgent need to regulate the usage of this pesticides in the Mekong River Delta.
