AbstractThis study was conducted to assess the cumulative impacts of economic activities on the valued ecosystem components and multi-functions of Van Phong bay. The objectives are to scope the existing environmental state through identification of primary drivers (stressors) and the state of the multifunction of its coastal wetland ecosystem, to assess the cumulative effects of the main activities on the Valued Ecosystem Components (VECs) and wetland multifunction, and to propose appropriate mitigations and monitoring measures applied to provide the appropriate protection to the wetland ecosystem in the light of the multifunction sustainability. The related information was referred to the previous researches and other secondary data. Besides, an additional survey was done in Hyundai Vinashin shipyard to retest the status of water and sediment quality inside and surrounding the shipyard. The one time sampling was done on August 2008 at 14 sites those included 14 samples of sediment and 10 samples of water. The result showed that water quality of aquaculture zones was nutrient polluted, the coastal area was in coliform pollution (19 to 441 times higher than the Vietnamese standard) and the areas inside, and surrounding the shipyard was polluted by heavy metals, especially, Cu content (65 - 100 times higher than Vietnamese standard), Pb (5 - 15 times), Cd (3 - 10 times), Fe (246 – 583 times), Zn (96 – 250 times). Moreover, there was accumulation of heavy metal in sediment, especial inside the shipyard factory area. The primary drivers (stressors) were listed as land base pollution of untreated domestic wastes discarded to the sea, land use change, unsustainable exploitation, ports and industrial activities, tourism, petroleum transshipment, and agriculture and salt-works. The multifunction of the area, as a wetland ecosystem, embraced regulation, production, carrier, and information (cultural) functions. To make an effective interdisciplinary management and strategies for the area and the whole province’s sustainable development, association of the related government offices and other organizations is required.
