Abstract | The objective of this study was to analyze the implementation of clean development mechanism (CDM) project for palm oil mill in Thailand called univanich TOPI biogas project and the profit from CDM application in this mill. Univanich TOPI biogas project uses covered inground anaerobic reactor (CIGAR) technology to treat palm oil mill effluent (POME) and captures biogas generates from anaerobic digestion of POME and use this biogas as fuel for electricity generation. CIGAR can reduce CO₂ emissions 3,286 tCO₂e/year. Biogas captured was 8,577,627 Nm³/year from 239,602 m³/year of POME, and produced 14,525,845 kWh/year of electricity. Electricity was supplied to wastewater treatment plant and biogas plant 13.58%, while extra 83.37% are sold out to Provincial Electricity Authority and 3.05% is lost. In point of view of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction according to CDM method it was found that this project can reduce GHG emissions 41,174 tCO₂e/year. Moreover, this study also conducted life cycle assessment (LCA) to analyze environmental impact in term of GHG emissions from crude palm oil (CPO) production through SimaPro software. The selected method was IPCC 2007 GWP20a. It was found that CO₂ emissions from CPO production process were 178,000 ton CO₂e/year. CO₂ emissions from baseline scenario were 198,426.36 ton CO₂e/year. CO₂ emissions from project scenario were 151,844.56 ton CO₂e/year. As a result, the project scenario can reduce 46,581.8 ton CO₂e/year. |
