AbstractCistern flush and pour flush toilet are widely used toilets types in urban and rural areas of the developing countries. Whereas, septic tank is commonly used and good onsite sanitation system. The collective collection, treatment of water and excreta in septic tank system have resulted the high water level of content in sludge, which has further caused the frequent desludging. Sludge and effluents are not free of pathogens. Facilities and practice of secondary treatment is limited. Therefore there is an increased risk to the environment and public health with the existing system. This problem has motivated to reinvent a system which can separate solid and water from black-water. The separation will help to reduce the water content in sludge and offer onsite specific treatment, that help to overcome the needs of secondary treatments of effluents and sludge before disposing. The main objective is to develop solid liquid separator applicable to blackwater. Specific objectives are(i) to evaluate the basic performance of selected separator: spiral separator and hydrocyclone (ii) to determine the factor affecting the performance of separator (iii) to characterize the properties of separated liquid.
