Abstract | High rate anaerobic processes have been used for the treatment of concentrated municipal and industrial wastewater for over a century. It is difficult to maintain optimum condition between acidogens and acetogens/methanogens at high organic loading rate in single stage anaerobic treatment process. Imbalance between VFAs generation and VFAs consumption lead to instability or failure of anaerobic treatment. In previous study, two-stage is commonly used to solve this problem. Moreover, temperature is important for biological reaction rate of anaerobic process. Operating at high temperature can increase performance of anaerobic process. However, operation at high temperature can reduce Extracellular Polymeric Substance (EPS) and granular formation will be inhibited. This problem can be solved by adding biocarrier. This study focused on the performance of biocarrier thermophilic two-stage anaerobic reactor. The experimental thermophilic condition of two-stage anaerobic reactors were operated at Organic Loading Rate 6 kg COD/m³.d. PVA-gel was used as biocarrier. 30% of biocarrier was added in each conditions of two stage anaerobic reactor. In this study, adding biocarrier in two-stage anaerobic reactor under thermophilic condition improved biokenetic coefficient and biomass growth which had low initial biomass. |
