AbstractGlycerol is a major by-product from the conversion of vegetable oils to biodiesel. As it is expected to accumulate in large quantities an alternate application for the same is essential. Its microbiological transformation to 1,3-propanediol constitutes a recent approach. The bioproduction of 1,3-propanediol by bacterial species Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC 10031 have been investigated in shake flask fermentation. 1,3-propanediol could be successfully produced by glycerol fermentation using K. pneumoniae ATCC 10031 in a 24 hours fermentation. The optimum fermentation conditions for 1,3-propanediol production by K. pneumoniae ATCC 10031 were clearly demonstrated. Based on the obtained results, the optimal initial glycerol concentration to produce 1,3-propanediol is 50 g/L. The highest 1,3-propanediol concentration of 7.45 g/L was achieved at the C:N ratio of 4.61 with nitrogen supplement as ammonium sulphate. In addition, temperature at 37°C is optimal for 1,3-propanediol formation by glycerol fermentation using K. pneumoniae ATCC 10031. Consequently, product glycerol from biodiesel production could be utilized for producing 1,3-propanediol which can be used for a number of applications including biodegradable industrial plastics
