Abstract | The main purpose of this study was to find out how them asculinity ideals among men in Cambodia, especially among policemen and soldiers, affect sexual behavior and risk taking and how the low status of women put housewives and sex workers in a position where they have few or no means to inf luence the sex act and how this can easily lead to sex without condom and consequent HIV transmission. The findings showed that hegemonic masculinity ideals exert great peer pressure on men within the uniformed services as loss of status within the peer group can result in ridicule and social exclusion, something which would make it very difficult to function effectively as a policem an or soldier. The hegemonic masculinity ideals also have a bearing on the position and consequent behavior of women in their relationships with men; women’s role and behavior was by both men and women of ten seen in relation to the men’s needs as well as the men’s higher social and, in practice, legal status. Thus, hegemonic masculinity ideals together with a culture and asociety that give lower status to women than to men affect both men’s and women’s behaviors within relationships and sexual encounters and contribute to a heightened risk of HIV transmission |
