Abstract | This study is focused on the coping strategies of ethnic refugees in the face of insecurities in Hui Sai Kao Village, Chiang Mai Province, Northern Thailand. The ethnic refugees in the village had fled from Myanmar over twenty years ago. In this new place, they have faced many difficulties and insecurities attached to their status as refugee. This study aims to find out how they cope with the insecurities with given situation. Besides, it finds out how women have more burdens and more vulnerabilities then men because of their culture and social practices. It is difficult for both men and women refugees to have regular income earnings for survival. Their access to assets is also quite limited due to their illegal status. They do not have basic human rights such as health care provision, education and free mobility due to their lack of citizenship. This study also discusses how external aids which are provided by non governmental organizations are important to those refugees when coping with insecurities. This study also gives recommendations to non governmental organizations in order to have gender-responsive planning and projects to help effectively both the refugee men and women in the study area. |
