Abstract | This research assesses the prevalence of fost traumatic stress among survivors six months after Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar on 2nd May 2008. It explores how post traumatic stress affects survivors' accessibility to, and reception of, humanitarian assistance during 'Crisis', "Rescue and Relief', and "Recovery" periods in Thar Hpyan village. Exploratory research was conducted, including a PTS symptoms assessment survey and in-depth interviews with open-ended questionnaires. A total 16 men and 16 women were found to be suffering from PTS among 61 respondents. The study found high prevalence of PTS and also showed that PTS was a factor in hindering access to humanitarian assistance. The role of social networks and family was also important in helping people with PTS get assistance. Gender also played a very important role as bias and discrimination against men was found during assistance distribution. Women may access assistance but face different forms of vulnerability in each post-disaster phase. Donors should recognize that mental well-being is important in order to reach the most needy. Assistance should be equally distributed regardless of age, sex and physical appearances of the survivors |
