AbstractThe study examines and compares the position of women in fish paste and semi -processed fish chain s. It further assesses the extent of economic empowerment between family -based women fish processors (semi -processed fish makers) and market -based women fish processors (fish paste processors) in the household. The study draws data from 13 market - based and 52 family -based women fish processors in Cambodia by using in- depth interview and household survey. The findings confirm that processed fish chain is sex aggrega tion where women concentrate in fish processing production. This creates uneven distribution of benefit between agents in the nodes and women processors gain the least profit. Comparin g between the two chains, women fish paste processors have better position than semi -processed fish makers in term s of profit and negotiation power in the market. There is a link between level of contribution to family and economic empowerment of these wom en in term of decision- making power over production’s capital , family expenditure and the use of resources. Market -based women fish processors making more contributing to family gain more decision- making power in household. Moreover, w omen have access to resources -family finance, land and credit, yet their access is not actually resulted from their occupation as home -based women workers. Economic opportunity as home -based women fish processors is weak in its effectiveness to challenge traditional gend er ro le of women in household.
