Abstract | The focus of this research is in the area of gender - based violence against women and girls in the context of increased militarization in Ye Township, Mon State. A study is important in order to analyze forms of gender - based violence agains t women and girls that have taking place and as well as to examine the consequences of the violence and the coping strategies of individ uals, families and communities. The study found that the context of increased militarization in southern Ye Township has greatly increased the vulnerability of gender - based violence against Mon women and girls. Another finding also shows that women become ethno markers: being the ones bestowed with the responsibility of holding the ethnic identity of the group and passing i t on to future generations, they are targeted by the military through gender - based violence in the context of the military oppression of ethnic minorities. The finding that has not been addressed in previous studies is the fact that women’s bodies are used for entertaining and sexual purposes in conflict zones by army troops. Though it is beyond the scope of this study, an entry point for discussion that this research proposes is how Burmese ethnic women do not only have a triple role, but quadruple: produc tive, reproductive, community and forced work. In the same line, the fact that women are being forced to work porters and as security safeguards has not been discussed in this study. This study calls for the government to effectively prosecute the perpetra tors of gender - based vi olence against women and girls and UN Security Council to put press to the SPDC to stop abused the rights of Mon ethnic women and girls. |
