Abstract | This thesis dealt with the security issue in the ch anging livelihood of the Talang Mamak people, Indonesia by taking case of the Talang Mama k people in the Durian Cacar area; and using gender as an analytical tool. Three resea rch questions were thus posed: What factors had influenced the changing livelihood of t he Talang Mamak people and how they experienced the changing livelihood? How the Talang Mamak woman and man experienced insecurity in that context? How the cha nging gender relations and gender norm influence insecurity? In order to answer these questions, the data were collected from oral and written sources. The oral sources mostly b ased on the life story interview of 20 respondents (ten females and ten males). The qualitative data analysis shows the changing li velihood of the Talang Mamak people is a long process, which could not be separated from t he identity construction and the big picture of the development process in Indonesia. Fu rther, changing forest covers due to the Forest Concession Rights, Industrial Planted Forest , transmigration program and the development of palm oil plantation gives significan t impact to the livelihood of the Talang Mamak people. The study found the changing of livel ihood strategy and access to the livelihood assets among the Talang Mamak people, an d their experience is varied, shaped by gender and other social stratification (age, mar ital status, geographical location, etc). The changing livelihood gave man better off positio n in comparison to the woman, due to their greater access to the livelihood assets The changing livelihoods linked to the security con dition of the Talang Mamak people; and it is not only threatening the community tradition but also made insecurity gendered. The intersectionality approach used in this study helps to understand the different insecurity experienced by the Talang Mamak woman. It is not on ly gender which made woman more insecure, but also the number of dependent children , limited access to livelihood assets (especially land) as well as the absence of extende d family support. Further, the changing gender norm and relations reinforces insecurity exp erienced by the Talang Mamak woman. This study recommended future strategies for mainst reamed culture and gender in the development of indigenous community; and taking the heterogeneity of the community into account. |
