| Abstract | This study focuses on the coping practices of Kachin Internally Displaced Persons who have been forced to flee from their native villages due to armed conflict between Myanmar government soldiers and Kachin Independent Army (KIA) since 9 June 2011. More than 75,000 Kachin people had to take refuge in different emergency camps including some 20,000 who had passed into China. The study interviewed a total of 110 men and women form three camps to analyze the problems that they are facing and their strategies to cope up with the situation. The armed conflict led them to suffer loss of livelihood, family breakdown, health problems, educational drop outs, challenges to cultural values, and psychological insecurities. Vulnerable groups, especially women, are more subject to the impact of armed conflict regarding the loss of housing, loss of privacy, no income, communicable diseases, and daily struggles of family life. Therefore, intervention from international families to end the war and restore peace in Kachin land; emergency relieves; humanitarian aids; health care services; and guidelines for coping insecurities especially for weaker sex should be immediately implemented. Furthermore, long-term plans for their rehabilitation and healing of traumata in the post war period should be introduced. |
