Abstract | This study addresses the experiences of Muslim women who become the leader of family since their partners are jailed and killed, in the conflict-prone context of Thailand’s deep South. Their experiences on taking unprecedented roles as breadwinner significantly illustrates several constraints because the sudden change of gender roles and responsibilities lead to the difficulties for women who live in the prevailing religion culture. Moreover, the opportunity of female breadwinner to secure their livelihoods is so constrained not only by prevailing social norms but also by the persistent violent conflict. Less opportunity to find decent jobs is also one of the challenges they face due to the relatively less educated and also less experience in terms of skills. The study draws from interviews conducted in Pattani Province and addresses the struggles of Muslim women single heads of households by employing of gender lens. The women’s livelihood needs and their coping strategies are discussed in this study that focuses on gender role and livelihood pattern in a highly constrained and extremely challenging context of conflict zone by realities and contending views of women’s roles. |
