Abstract | Aquaculture is a considered as main livelihoods activities in coastal communities. It provides alternative livelihoods and income generating opportunities to ensure food security and improve the quality of life of rural communities. However, aquaculture is vulnerable to natural disaster as storms due to aquaculture heavily depend on reliable natural resources as land and water. The finding reveals that women play a crucial role in aquaculture production. Due to they are actively involved in many various activities of pond aquaculture including feed & seed collection, maturing, feeding and harvesting. However, women are more vulnerable and disadvantage in cope with climate change than their counterparts due to their low adaptive capacity. Their livelihood more reliant on climate-sensitive resources and generally have less adaptive capacity because of lack of access and control over land and credit. These are considered as main obstacles for women to engage in livelihood diversification to cope with climate change as storms. As a results, women are more vulnerable regarding to the burdens of workload, credit shortage and time poverty. Interestingly, climate change has different impacts on women‟s marital status such as married women, widow and those as headed households. Widows and women headed household are more disadvantage more than married women due to their full responsibility to household survival without sharing from their partners. The aim of this paper is to find out the vulnerability and livelihoods adaptation strategy of women in different marital status to cope with the impacts of climate change. The paper is mainly based on primary data and secondary materials including books, articles and contemporary newspaper. The study revealed that women in different status used different strategies to adapt with the changing pattern of livelihoods due to the impact of climate change. |
